pupuka means… Pronounced pooh-POOH-kuh, this fun little
Hawaiian word has two opposite meanings:
ugly, and beautiful, depending on your tone
of voice. Saying "pupuka" as an exclamation
of a beautiful sight will leave no doubt in a
listener's mind as to what you mean. Here
I do my best to search out the beautiful side
of "pupuka." Enjoy!

By Ihilani, November 12, 2010, 7:24 am Ok….so we’re moving back to Hawaii in
less
than
a
month.
We DON’T have a job (but LOTS of prospects)
We don’t have a home (camping out at M and D’s for a little while)
We have NOTHING.
And while sometimes I feel like screaming
because I felt like I was just in this situation a few months ago,
I FEEL different.
I FEEL like being home is where we’re supposed to be.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. When my husband’s grandfather died, we were living in Utah, but moving home in a few weeks. We were distraught over not being there when he passed, but still shuddered at the thought of forking over the cash (we were students, so we had none) to change our flights and go home even earlier. Oddly, it was my husband who didn’t think we could do it financially, and resigned himself to missing the funeral of the man who had helped raise him and was so influential on his life.

By Ihilani, October 11, 2010, 10:32 am Ok, so this isn’t the most profound of posts, but when we moved here, we signed up for DVR. You know, this is actually one of the most brilliant inventions EVER – I think. It allows you to be where you need to be WHEN you need to be there, without missing your favorite shows. I don’t know how many football games Keola’s recorded already. Do you know how LOOOONG football games are? They take over the whole day! I especially hate it when Keola watches 3 games at once. I can never keep up, or watch what I want.

By Ihilani, October 10, 2010, 8:02 pm In college, I had an inspired choir director who was more concerned with producing good people than good music. Every Wednesday we had a devotional, which always began with a hymn. This song, More Holiness Give Me was my favorite. Instead of singing it all the way through, she would play it three times (one for each verse) and each of us individually would choose the line that we needed in our lives. It was a powerful experience as we’d hear 5 voices during one line, 2 voices on another, 1 voice on another, and sometimes no voices. In those

The skill of managing personal finances has always eluded me. Unlike my mother, who I would see slaving over her receipts, meticulously entering them into her checkbook when she had a spare moment, and then dutifully balancing her checkbook against her statements every month, I go through spurts of financial responsibility. I thought having a shiny new app to help speed up the process might make things better, but my main holdup is the chore of entering in every transaction. And with internet transactions, I don’t get a receipt (unless I waste a whole sheet of paper
