bringing the outside in: my first flower arrangement

I wouldn’t have done this if it wasn’t for the fact that I signed up to decorate our chapel for church on Sunday. We all take turns, but in my entire adult life I’ve never been asked to do it (and I never volunteered) until now. It’s not much really, just something on each side of the podium and something for a separate class. You can do whatever you want, but most people do flower arrangements and I decided to try my hand at it.
I don’t know what these flowers are called, but I was drawn to the color and the simplicity of the petals. I picked up one bouquet of each color.
These flowers had really long stems, and since I didn’t buy a ton, I decided to cut them short and pack them close together so they would look more full. Plus I had these two matching bowls, so I decided a short arrangement was the way to go (never mind the chapel’s big and these little babies will probably go unnoticed. Hey, I did it right?
I used wet sand from the back yard to hold the flowers in place, which also resulted in some bent stems, but it all worked out in the end. If I was smart, I would’ve mixed the plant food in with my sand but I forgot. I guess I could still sprinkle it in anyway.
I placed purple flower in the middle of the bowl, and then added the green flowers around it working my way from the center out to the edge of the bowl. So easy, and it really does look like there’s more.
Putting the arrangement together was so soothing. I’m definitely going to do this more often. Maybe take a class. There’s something so rewarding about taking a bunch of naturally beautiful things and putting them together to make one beautiful whole. I LOVED creating these arrangements just as much if not MORE than my final result.
I’m pretty proud of myself. These make me smile. Scratch that. These make me GRIN from ear to ear. Keola said it reminded him of a swamp. What he meant to say was it reminded him of a lilly pad that you might find in a swamp, but you know how guys are with words sometimes. Nice try hun.
Do you like to have plants in your home? How does it add to the atmosphere indoors?

Around Here…

Around here we’ve been so busy partying. It’s kind of crazy actually. My niece had her epic 1st birthday complete with abundant handmade decor that we all have sore fingers from, and ʻono Hawaiian grindz that we’re STILL eating a week later (no complaints about eating kalua pig,  laulau and poi all week).
We went out to Hana last Saturday morning for the party that night, and came back Sunday. We decided to head through Kaupo (my first time) where I could be heard moaning and groaning about  how my iPhone died the night before and I didn’t have my charger so I got ZERO pics of the back end of Maui.
Around here we celebrated a quiet 2nd birthday for Noweo, who turned 2 on Sunday. We’re planning a trip to the Maui Ocean Center tomorrow since half of last weekend was spent on the road. I’ll be sure my phone has a full charge! We noticed that since her birthday, she’s actually become MORE affectionate. She loves to give us GIANT hugs and hold onto us like she hasn’t seen us in years. We are THRILLED with this new development. Her language is exploding and she LOVES to sing. I still can’t understand most of what she says, but we’re getting there.
Around here I’m a little drained from projects for family and friends. I’m happy to help, but man, when it rains, it pours! Seems like everyone needed something over the last two weeks. Now I’m looking forward to getting back to work on my own projects, and maybe learning how to manage how much I put on my plate a little better.
Around here I experienced an epic fail trying to make some changes to my website. After 2 days I gave up and put it back the way it was. Guess I can’t do EVERYTHING myself. I think I was just doing it because deep down I’m afraid of making REAL progress.
Around here I’m anxiously awaiting the arrival of my STICKERS. Just shipped today from Hilo so maybe I’ll get them tomorrow??? (fingers crossed!)
Around here I’m getting caught up on my favorite blogs. I fell pitifully behind and there’s so much great stuff out there!
What’s going on in your neck of the woods?

First Friday Success!
